Bring Your Pet Along for Your New Year's Resolution

Cheryl Phillips

The New Year brings many new beginnings and fresh starts. Most people focus on personal goals regarding things like diet, exercise, and money. It’s not too late to create some solid resolutions that include someone who might not come to mind right away: your pet!

Here’s a list of some ways to include pets in your New Year’s resolutions to benefit you both.

  1. Create a weight loss plan to benefit you both.

Did you know that more than 50% of animals are considered overweight? Like humans, portion control is very important when watching your weight. Be sure to measure with an 8-ounce measuring cup each time your furry friend is fed. Don’t forget to include healthy ingredients, too!

  1. Try a new way to get active together.

Finding new ways to get exercise can be so much easier with a pet by your side. Whether it’s going for an extra walk a day, hiking, or dog-yoga, the options are endless for fun ways to get active while bonding together.

  1. Update their information.

If you’ve moved, changed phone numbers, or just want a fun new tag for your pup, make sure their contact information is up-to-date in case of emergency. (GG recommends micro-chipping…to find your pet if they get lost.)

  1. Make appointments for the year.

Can you remember the last time you went for a check up? How about your pet? Maybe you’ve been slacking on dentist visits and your pet could use some TLC from the vet. You can ask for advice and even change their food.  Book an appointment now and stick to it! It will make a difference in the long run.

  1. Consider fostering/adopting.

If you don’t already have a pet of your own, fostering an animal is the perfect way to find out if pet ownership is for you. You may fall in love and end up adopting an animal or need, or just have someone to keep you company and to care for in their time of need.

Whether you try all of these or just one, it could make a big difference in your life and theirs!

Happy 2018!
